Day Trip To Fredericksburg, VA

Leave your zip code for a day!

Thursday, August 5, 2021

9:00 am - 11:00 am – Arrive at the Fredericksburg Visitor Center for restrooms and to meet a step-on guide for a general overview tour of Fredericksburg to include George Washington’ family homes and Civil War History and overview of historic sites.

11:15 am – 12:15 pm – George Washington’s Ferry Farm - On the banks of the Rappahannock River, is the site of Washington’s boyhood home where he, his sister Betty, and brothers Samuel, John and Charles grew up.  At the age of 11, George inherited the farm upon his father’s death, and his mother, Mary Ball Washington, lived here until 1772 when George bought a house in Fredericksburg for her. At Ferry Farm today, archaeologists have unearthed Indian artifacts dating back 10,000 years, early 18th-century home sites and Civil War artifacts. After considerable research, Ferry Farm has constructed a replica of what they think the Washington home would have looked like using construction methods from the time period. A garden featuring plants that would have been grown during the Washington’s residence is also on the property.

12:30 – 2:30 pm - Lunch and shopping on your own. Bus parking is located on the corner of Charlotte and Caroline. Visitor Center staff will provide dining guides to the group. There are just under 50 restaurants along with specialty shops to include clothing, olive oil, and household goods.

3:00 pm – 4:00 pm - Tour A. Smith Bowman Distillery – Winners of multiple awards for their spirits, groups to the area can experience a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the production of hand-crafted spirits. Tours explore distillation, barreling and bottling of bourbon, still house, barrel warehouse and barrel dump and fill room all at Virginia’s oldest distillery.
