wmuWOMEN ON MISSION

Women on Mission is a missions organization for women (ages 18 and up) through which women pray for and give to missions, do missions, learn about missions, grow spiritually toward a missions lifestyle,  and participate in the work of the church and the denomination.

The purpose of all Women on Mission activities is that every person have the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel.  For more information on a national level please visit www.womenonmission.com

At Salem there are two WOM Organizations.  The "Day Group" meets at 10:00am, the "Night Group" at 7:00pm on the third Tuesday of each month.  They are a part of the Southern Baptist Women's Missionary Union which sponsors Mission Friends, G.A's, R.A.'s, and Acteens. Every year they promote and contribute to three mission offerings: Annie Armstrong Offering for North American Missions, Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions and Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for world missions.

The WMU at Salem began as the "Ladies Aid Society" in the late 1800's.  The Woman's Missionary Union of the Hermon Association was formed in 1902.  More information is included on the history page in the article by Sadie Pitts.   Salem WOM  has carried on the tradition of supporting missions financially and in deed.  Funds from cookbook sales, brunswick stews,  and serving Ruritan dinners are spent on local missions.  Some of these activities include helping individuals in financial need; sending cards, taking gifts, and preparing meals for the sick and their families; providing the meal for the "True Love Waits Banquet"; sending packages to members of the military; giving "going away" gifts to new college students,  and providing receptions after funerals.
