GLOCAL MISSIONS

This ministry began
in 2005 when Chuck Womble asked area farmers to donate grain for distribution
in Niger, an African country devastated by famine and poverty. Convoy of Hope,
a nonprofit organization
supplied the containers and shipped the 90,000 pounds of grain free of
charge. A team from Salem went to Niger to oversee the distribution.
This year loading and shipping costs would have been $12,500 per container so cash donations were sought from
community, church members, and farmers
from Caroline, Hanover and Essex counties. Grain was purchased in Niger to
distribute. For more information read Reaching Out to Widows published in The Free Lance Star August 5, 2007.
Team members
are currently planning a trip to
Bradney County, Tennessee July 20-26, 2008. This is in the
Appalachia Coal country where the average income of a family of 4 is
about $12,000. People with ministry gifts for home repair, VBS,
Bible clubs, sewing, prayer walking , visiting nursing homes,
evangelism, sports, or discipleship are needed. If you can
use your spiritual gift there contact Chuck Womble at
804-633-6616 or e-mail land2sea@bealenet.com
WOMEN ON MISSION
Women on Mission is a missions organization for women (ages 18 and up)
through which women pray for and give to missions, do missions, learn about
missions, grow spiritually toward a missions lifestyle, and participate in the
work of the church and the denomination.
The purpose of all Women on Mission activities is that every person have the
opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel. For more information on a national level please visit www.womenonmission.com.
At Salem there are two WOM Organizations. The "Day
Group" meets at 10:00am, the "Night Group" at 7:00pm on the third
Tuesday of each month. They are a part of the Southern Baptist
Women's Missionary Union which sponsors Mission Friends, G.A's, R.A.'s,
and Acteens. Every year they promote and contribute to three mission
offerings: Annie Armstrong Offering for North American Missions, Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions and Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for world missions.
The WMU at Salem began as the "Ladies Aid Society" in the late
1800's. The Woman's Missionary Union of the Hermon
Association was formed in 1902. More information is included
on the history page in the
article by Sadie Pitts. Salem WOM has carried on the
tradition of supporting missions financially and in deed. Funds
from cookbook sales, bunswick stews, and serving Ruritan dinners
are spent on local missions. Some of these activities include
helping individuals in financial need; sending cards, taking gifts, and
preparing meals for the sick and their families; providing the
meal for the "True Love Waits Banquet"; sending packages to members of
the military; giving "going away" gifts to new college students,
and providing receptions after funerals.
